Made with Mindfulness

Mindfully Made

In our beautiful studio in Lithuania, Urte is skilfully sewing the entire collection of sun + her with passion. It brings her so much joy to know that the women of our sun + her tribe proudly wear the pieces she so passionately creates. We spent some time in the studio with her to ask her about her story and we get to know more about how she practices mindfulness in her work and personal life.

1. How do you start your work day? Do you have any rituals?

I start my day like all people. Nothing special. Morning walking/ running with my dog. Sometimes yoga or exercises. Always breakfast, coffee and some quiet moments before my work day.

2. At what moment in your life did you know you wanted to make clothing?

I didn’t have that moment. It came very naturally in my childhood. Or even earlier, before my birth. Interesting fact that I didn’t have any grandmothers or other family members whose were tailors. But my mother, when she was pregnant me, always sewed for my sister and brother. So I like to believe that this sewing passion came with my birth.

3. How do you practice mindfulness throughout your day?

Three things always help me back in myself – nature, walking and reading.

4. What do you love most about the work you do?

Almost everything I like in my work. Especially I like to make patterns or start a new project. And of course the best feeling is to see the final result. After many hours, mistakes and changes to see our ideas in the reality.

5. What are your biggest challenges when it comes to your work?

I think the biggest challenge in my work is to sew an individual order without fitting and seeing the customer.

6. Do you enjoy sewing and working most with linen fabric? Or is there another type of fabric which you also like to work with?

At this moment I am working only with linen and organic cotton. But my favorite fabric definitely is a linen.

7. Why do you personally love linen?

I think everyone who explores linen clothes won’t want to go back to synthetic fabrics. I feel different when I am wearing a linen. It feels like a second skin. You don’t feel any itching or discomfort. Also I like linen because of it’s versatility. A linen can cool your body but also can keep you warm. It’s a common misconception that linen can only be worn during the summer months. This fall I love to mix linen clothes with winter sweaters.

8. Which piece from the sun + her collection is your favorite? And in which color/ fabric?

This autumn I am in love Diana pants. Especially Earth color. I think every girl should have them in her wardrobe. A classic timeless style and very easy to combine with other garments.

9. What is a fun fact about you that not many people know?

I am a tailor but I rarely sew anything for myself. This year I am trying to change that.

10. We know that your dog Meta comes to work with you in the studio and she's an inportant part of your life. Can you tell us the story of how she came into your life?

Oh, she’s my angel. I can talk about her for hours. All my friends know how I am crazy about  dogs.

When I started to live alone I felt deep feeling that it’s time to take a dog from the shelter. I had already planned to go there, but one evening I found  a message in the internet about gifted dogs. And when I saw her in the photos… it was love from the first sight. Next morning I called and asked if I could take her. Because she was so tiny and still feeding mother’s milk, I needed to wait  for two weeks. On December 26th I went to pick her up and it was a perfect Christmas gift I gave to myself. Now she is almost 5 years old.

11. Tell us about your ideal day in the sun. How would you spend your day?

We live in such a fast world. We work and do a million things per day. So my perfect day is just stop and enjoy this moment. Maybe read a book or just sit and watch things all around me.

12. What is your favorite quote or mantra?

Where your mind goes - the energy flows.

13. What is your astrological sun sign?

I am a Virgo.

14. What are you most excited about when thinking of the future of sun + her?

Every year we are growing more and more. For me it’s crazy how wonderful women trust and love our garments. I am proud what I’ve learnt working with the amazing sun + her team. I can’t wait to see where this journey will flow us all together.
